Richard and Susannah Burnell
A Richard Burnell was born in 1815 in Vellore, his parents were Martin and Mary Ann Burnell and
I have made the assumption that he is the same Richard Burnell, drummer in the 49th Regiment N.I.
that married Susannah, a "Native Christian", in Kamptee in 1841.
The basis of my assumption is:
-
Richard's age of 26 years in 1841 would be a suitable age for a man to marry.
- Richard's parents were Irish and most likely Indian or Anglo Indian. This would mean that Richard
would also be Anglo Indian and typically he would become a drummer or fifer in the Native Army.
- Being of mixed blood, Richard's spouse would most likely be Indian or Anglo Indian.
- I have not found another eligible Richard Burnell in the years 1830 to 1870.
Richard and Susannah had two daughters, Georgiana and Elizabeth. Georgiana went on to marry
William Simmonds in 1856
