George's family had moved from Multan to Saharanpur by 1915 when Gertrude was born.

George and his brothers and sisters all went to boarding school in Agra.
When George's father (John Henry) died, George lived for some time with his cousin, William (Josephs) possibly in Howra or Calcutta. He worked in the textile industry for some time but by the time he married Kathleen he was secretary at the Grail club in Calcutta.
