Anwoth / Girthon Parishes

Girthon is a small village 6 miles from Kirkcudbright, and Anwoth, another small village is about 4 miles further on. The larger village of Gatehouse of Fleet was built between Girthon and Anwoth in the late 1700's for the manufacture of cotton.

John and Agnes (née Nish) appear to have lived in Anwoth on two occasions, when their sons Thomas and William were born in 1854 and 1864 respectively.

Jessie Gemmell who married John Skimming in 1876 was born either in Girthon or Anwoth in 1850.

Thomas McSkimming (son of John and Agnes) married Agnes Toul in Gatehouse of Fleet in 1875, they lived in Birtwhistle street, which is where their 8 children were born between 1874 and 1891, in the 1901 census, the family were living at 11 Birtwhistle street.
Both Thomas and Agnes died in Gatehouse.
