Gravestone Inscription at Twynholm Churchyard
Erected by Mary Chisholm, in memory of her husband John McDowall, who died at Twynholm 22nd Nov'r 1891, aged 34 years. Also of her children namely; James, who died at Newcastle 23rd April 1887, aged 3 months; Maggie, who died at Newcastle 22nd May 1887, aged 7 years and 11 months; John, died at Twynholm 15th November 1891, aged 3 months. Jeannie Rowan McDowall, sister of the above John McDowall, who died at Doon, Twynholm, 19th November 1893, aged 24 years. 'Not lost, but gone before.' And Margaret Crossan, their mother, wife of James McDowall, who died 12th April 1899, aged 68 years.
In the 1871 census Mary aged 13 is living with Neil and Eglatine Milroy in Kells, described as niece - in - law.
Mary and her husband John lived in Newcastle and Twynholm. After John McDowall's death Mary and her only surviving child, Jessie worked for the registrar in Twynholm.
After her brother Alexander's wife died, Mary was her brother's housekeeper until his death. She then lived at Mid Park on the Crossmichael road out of Castle Douglas.
