Sergeant William Simmons or Simmonds served in the E. Company, Madras European Regiment in the early 19th century. William and his "Special Friend", Elizabeth Wheatley or Page (I.Briton) had four children, Mary Ann, Caroline, Jane and William. William snr died in Nagpore in 1835 6 months before his son, William was born. Mary Ann Simmonds married private Job Hargreaves of the 1st Madras Fusiliers in 1844. Caroline Simmonds married Corporal Stephen Pincott of the 1st Fusiliers of Bangalore in 1845. William Simmonds joined the Madras Native Infantry and then married Georgianna Burnell in Bangalore in 1856.
