Hugh Jamieson 1829 - 1904

The Jamieson family is related to the McSkimming family through the marriage of Margaret Jamieson and John McSkimming in 1900.

Hugh Jamieson was born in Dalry (St. Johns Town of Dalry), Kirkcudbrightshire in 1829. According to the 1841 and 1851 census, Hugh worked as a farm labourer at Nether Ervie and Crouchie farms, Parton.

It seems likely that Hugh is the son of Michael Jamieson and Mary Duff, but no documenation can be found to confirm this. However, a DNA match has been found on ancestry.co.uk to support the theory that Hugh's parents were Michael Jamieson and Mary Duff.

What we can be sure of, is that there were five Jamieson children born in Dalry between 1817 and 1834 and that there is written evidence, on death certificates and census returns, that four of these were children of Michael and Mary. On the 1841 census 12 year old Hugh, 16 year old Sarah and 9 year old Elizabeth were working on farms close to the place that Michael and Mary lived. Obviously, the childen left home and started to earn a living at an early age.

Hugh married Agnes Tait in Crossmichael in 1853 and they went on to have 12 children, Margaret being the youngest.

There is a question mark regarding the date of Hugh and Agnes's marriage, the Scotlandspeople OPR indexes and Samina's birth certificate give a date of 28 November 1851 but the parent's date of marriage on Margaret's birth certificate is 4 Dec 1853. I have taken the 1851 date to be correct because this is the date on two separate documents, but I am not 100% convinced.

On the page containing Margaret's birth certificate, there is a previous entry for a James Tardy Jamieson (illegitimate) born on 16 Nov 1877 at Upper Senwick to Agnes Jamieson, this was one week before Margaret was born. I guess James's mother must have been Agnes - Hugh and Agnes's eldest daughter.
