Note on Marriage

After he left school, Samuel worked as a gardener at St. Mary's Isle, Kirkcudbright.

Mary's occupation was domestic servant, it is thought that she also worked at St. Mary's Isle but the circumstances of her relocation from south east Scotland to Galloway are unknown. The estate at St. Mary's Isle was owned by the Earl of Selkirk so maybe he also had an estate in the Kelso area.

Samuel and Mary married in 1914 in Edinburgh.

Samuel is known to have served in the Army during the 1914-1918 war and was wounded in the hand in France at Passchendale (Ypres), probably in 1917.

The family lived in Queen Street, Castle Douglas from at least 1915 until the death of Mary in 1972.

Samuel's occupations were: Gardener at St. Mary's Isle, Van driver in Castle Douglas for Stevenson's the Grocer, Taxi driver in Castle Douglas for James Haugh, Crown Garage.

James Haugh's wife, Agnes Davidson was related to Samuel through his mother (Jane Martin).

Both Samuel and Mary were cremated at Ayr Crematorium.
