Catherine Campbell was living in Strachur, Argyleshire when John was born in 1849 and she
appears in the 1851 census for Strachur. John Hall is also on the Strachur census but living with
an uncle. There is no sign of James Hall in Strachur in 1851.
By 1861, the family are living together in Channelkirk, Lauder, Berwickshire
