Samuel's family were stone dykers and Samuel was working at this trade by 1851 when he was 14 years old. The family lived in Rascarrel Cottage in the parish of Rerrick, probably in or near the village of Dundrennan.
In 1855, Samuel married Margaret Paterson in Minnigaff, at this time his occupation was given as Militia Man in the Galloway Rifles.
Samuel and Margaret had two Children:
Mary - b. Blackcraig, Minnigaff in 1858 - married John McDowall and lived in Newcastle, Twynholm, Parton and Castle Douglas.
Alexander - b. Blackcraig, Minnigaff in 1860 - Married Jane Martin and lived mainly at Cruichie, Parton.
Samuel had 3 brothers and 3 sisters who were all born in Rerrick.
Margaret had 4 brothers and 1 sister.
In 1863, Samuel was working on the construction of the Pitlochry to Aviemore railway line near Dal-na-mine, Blair Atholl when he died following an accident.
In 1870, Margaret re-married to widower, James Skimming in Blackcraig, Minnigaff. They continued to live in Blackdraig and had 4 children.
The family moved to Whitehaven in Cumbria around 1881, James Skimming does not appear in the 1881 census and Margaret is named as the head of the house. Margaret died in Whitehaven in 1893.
By coincidence, James Skimming's first wife was also called Margaret Paterson and they too married in Minnigaff in 1855.
